Jason picked page 42 today for our HTTYD fanart, and the dragon was the Deadly Nadder! I think this is the most detailed piece I've done in a LONG time! Just the pencils, and maybe one day I'll actually ink this bad boy
This is kinda awesome. I have not seen HTTYD nor do I know what a Deadly Nadder is. I need to research this. However, the detailing in the scales is awesome. He looks like he'd be very fun to draw. Assuming the reference I found is correct: [link] then he seems to match quite well.
The claw though doesn't feel quite curved. Since dragon claws are mostly based on lizard feet or raptor talons depending on the breed and artist's preference we normally wind up with something along this: [link] as the basic shape of a claw. This ref seems to support the Nadder having them as well: [link]
I tried to find a tutorial on dragon claws, dino claws, raptor claws or anything else to help explain how to render the curve but couldn't find one I liked. So I'll try this textually. The 'carrot' shapes are a good start for the claws but with the incredible detailing of the rest of the piece they look a little bland and flat to me. This: [link] has some of the basic lines that are used to help convey the shape and texture. The claws wind up almost more diamond shape but they read more like claws.
In any event he looks adorable! Like a puppy wanting to play, and I love him. I also have no idea what the reference page looked like and may be talking out my booty.
I couldn't get the first and third links to show But here is other folks fanart on the Nadder [link] Here's a pic from the movie itself: [link]
The claws are rather homely, but I think that's more the style of the computer graphics I do like the talon type claws myself At some point, I could scan the two pages I used for reference for you for better appraisal
I think this is one of my best and most detailed pieces (hence why I won't color/ink it as I'm terrified to mess it up! I will take your suggestion from before and use a lightbox to do so at some point
The links were from the movie, I just yahoo searched it.
Don't be too afraid to go ahead with the inking and such. Carla used to hand me the pen and the paper and go 'HERE make ink on it so I HAVE to go ahead and ink it'. It was cute, but it worked.
I think it's a very nice piece. The subject matter allows for more detailing then spandex costumes and snazzy fleshy bits.
With me playing around with the Copics I've been doing the Eeeeee, I'm going to mess it up, but Carla keeps rolling her eyes at me and telling me there is no 'messing up' there's simply learning and having fun.
